5 stars (Just what I was looking for) - I've only had this book for a few days, and I'm very impressed with the depth of coverage this book goes into. It does a great job of covering all the important topics of survival, starting with the basics. It has a nice set of field guides for edible plants in various regions as well as poisonous. It covers trapping and hunting game, and a whole section on knots. Grant it, depending on your level of know how, it may still behoove you to get more in-depth book on some of certain topics. Still this book of course doesn't replace in-depth research a person needs to do for the specific region they plan to hike or hunt or whatever they do. It makes a great reference book!
5 stars (I hope I never need the skills taught in this book.) - However, if I do, I hope that I also have this book with me. It is very comprehensive, and I will keep this in a survival kit so that if I ever am stranded and have the good fortune of being stranded with my survival kit, then I will be able to use this book as a resource. Now that we have seen the havoc mother nature can wreak, as well as manmade disasters, I think that everyone should read this book or one like it in order to have some basic knowledge regarding how to live off the land -- no matter the condition -- and to be found (or not be found, if not being found is more conducive to survival). This is an excellent resource for any person who might find herself in a situation lacking in modern comforts, where knowledge of how to survive means the difference between living and dying.
5 stars (Filled with practical and impractical solutions...) - You know, reading this book, one might get the impression that it was developed by and for crazy war vets who are completely paranoid about getting stranded on a desert island and left for dead. Which is a good thing, because it is filled with invaluable knowledge about making shelter, fire, food, first aid, how to make deadly traps for animals or angry cannabilizing natives, well, actually I kind of adlibbed that one but you could definitely manufacture a trap deadly enough to kill one or even many people. kind of scary, actually but I think this should be mandatory reading for all US citizens just because it teaches us preparedness for the most harsh of all unexpected circumstances. |
